Episode 175 : The Cost of Healing in Silence with Ashley McGirt-Adair

In this episode of 'Is My Aura On Straight?', host Aycee Brown interviews licensed psychotherapist Ashley McGirt-Adair, founder of the Therapy Fund Foundation and author of the upcoming book ‘The Cost of Healing in Silence’, about how trauma and generational survival shape Black communities and the need for culturally responsive mental health care.

Ashley shares wanting to be a lawyer inspired by Johnny Cochran, pivoting to therapy after inadequate support for her own mental health, and continuing court-related work as an expert witness on discrimination and police brutality cases, including a difficult deposition where her social media was used against her. She explains why her book leads with personal stories through her grandmother’s lens, drawing from hospice work that highlighted stark health disparities.

They discuss emotional numbness, the difficulty of leaving dysfunction, social media’s harms and benefits, grounding practices, and the importance of healing out loud and finding chosen family support.
